There are literally thousands of different kinds of tiles: wall tiles, floor tiles, mosaic tiles, natural tiles etc. You could choose an old-fashioned Dutch style based on traditional Delft blue ceramics, or a sleek modern style in a black-and-white design.

If you’re going to tile a floor which has not yet been earthed, you should always add a thick strand of tinned copper wire for this purpose. The wires can go all the way to the meter cupboard, but any work in the meter cupboard itself should be done by an electrician!

Novo does not recommend that DIY enthusiasts do the tiling themselves, unless you’re really an experienced tiler and do it on a regular (weekly) basis. Getting a good result is a matter of skill and experience; even an experienced tiler who is out of practice is less likely to get a perfect result.

Requirements for tiling

  • bucket
  • power drill (not required, but it is useful)
  • trowel for shovelling and mixing mortar
  • carpenter’s level
  • carpenter’s pencil
  • tile cutter
  • adhesive comb (tiling trowel)
  • roller tape
  • tiles
  • tile crosses
  • tile adhesive
  • water

Before you start tiling, make sure the subsurface is free of grease and dust and has been levelled. Uneven spots that do not deviate more than 5 mm should not be a problem, but if the wall has more deviations than that, you should even out the bumpy areas first.

Walls that will be exposed to water regularly later, like shower cubicles, should be treated with a cement-based product. Red band or Gold band will be fine for other walls.

If you’re going to tile the walls as well as the floor, you should start with the walls to avoid stains caused by the used grout settling into the newly tiled floor while you’re tiling the walls.
