Remodeling question

How much does it cost to build
a complete home extension?

Tiling a wall

Before you start tiling the wall, it’s a good idea to lay out the tiles on the floor including the joint width. Applying the tile crosses can help with the exact joint width. Then, attach a batten with a water level to the wall, leaving space for one tile between the batten and the ground. Don’t hammer the nails in all the way, because they have to be removed later on!

Draw a line in the centre of the wall and attach another batten in a vertical direction.

Make the tile adhesive according to the instructions, place the adhesive comb against the wall and pull it horizontally over the wall. Press the first tile firmly in the corner of the two battens. Press a tile cross on the corner of the first tile and place the next tile.  Make sure you press the tile crosses firmly into the adhesive, since they will not be removed later. Remove any excess adhesive immediately with a damp cloth!

Tile the rest of the way in the same way and remove the battens at the end of the job. Depending on the size of your wall and the tiles, you can use a tile cutter to cut the tiles.

Keep a space of at least 6mm between the last tile and the edge of the wall.

When the tile adhesive has hardened, apply jointing compound with a rubber plasterer’s trowel. Excess jointing compound can be removed with a damp cloth.

Tiling a floor

Measure the length and width of the floor and calculate how many tiles you will need. It is important to take the joint widths into account. Attach two tensile wires (or cords) in the corner of the room using nails.

Start by tiling the floor opposite the door and apply tile adhesive with a trowel. The adhesive can be spread out with the help of a trowel. Place the first tile in the corner of the room between the two tensile wires. Place a tile cross at the corner of the tile and press firmly. Continue the work as above for the first line of tiles. You can use the tile cutter to cut pieces to sizes for the corners of the room.

For awkward shapes and areas such as pipes and drains, trim the tiles with a tile cutter and use pliers or a file specifically for tiles for more precise and delicate modifications.

Continue as above for the rest of the floor. After 24 hours, once the tile adhesive is dry, you can spread adhesive over the tiles with a rubber trowel.
