Removing an old floor

Removing floors

Removing old laminate is very time-consuming and when the laminate is still in good condition, we usually advise against it. In many cases, it is preferable to thoroughly clean the existing floor and then lay the new floor over it. Before doing so, it is important to check the condition of the existing laminate.

If the laminate has sustained water damage, for instance from a leaking water pipe, we strongly advise against laying a new floor over it. Often the laminate and the insulated subfloor have expanded due to the moisture and are warped. Check if the concrete screed is dry. If not, you can dry it out with a dehumidifier.

If the laminate boards have been damaged by heavy objects or other factors, the floor will not be suitable as a base for other floors.

If the laminate floor still is in good condition, it is important to clean it thoroughly, removing any dust and grease. You can do this easily with a vacuum cleaner or a cloth and a bucket of water mixed with an all-purpose household cleaner. Make sure that the floor does not get too wet, and has time to dry thoroughly, before the new floor is laid over it.

If the existing floor is not suitable as a base layer, it is best to remove it. Start by removing the floor sections at the side against the wall and work your way towards the middle. Laminate can easily be clicked apart. A wooden floor is often nailed down; the nails can be pried out using a crowbar. The laminate or wooden floorboards are easiest to transport when they are tied into bundles. If the boards are too large, it is best to saw them in half and then remove them in smaller packages.

Removing carpeting

Carpeting is easy to remove and is generally self-explanatory. Use a utility knife to cut the carpet into sections and then tear out the sections piece by piece. These sections can be rolled up and put into garbage bags for easy transport. Any glue residues still left on the floor can just be left there and should not pose a problem for the new floor.
